Exciting visit by David Crystal!
We’re proud to be quite a literary establishment here at Thomas Oken’s! We support Warwick Words (a literary festival which takes place over a couple of weeks during the spring and autumn), we have a creative writing group that meets in our upstairs room weekly and we host a weekly lipreading group for hard of hearing adults learning to access the visual aspects of speech and language.
Imagine our delight, therefore, when the internationally renowned Linguistics expert, David Crystal, and his wife, Hilary (also a writer), popped in for Cream Teas before their appearance that evening at the Bridge House Theatre as part of the Warwick Words festival. Jo became a fan of David’s in her student days (studying to become a Teacher of the Deaf) and will still while away the occasional evening flicking through his two Encyclopaedias on Language – far more interesting than they sound!
Here’s a picture of Jo (barely containing my excitement!) with Hilary and David. Look them up on davidcrystal.com – buy a book or go and hear them speak – you won’t be disappointed!
