Loose Leaf Teas

At Thomas Oken Tea Rooms we believe in a socially just and environmentally sustainable tea industry. All our shippers belong to the Ethical Tea Partnership. We work with Cilydd (Welsh for ‘together’) – a co-operative of independent cafes and bistros, set up in 2010 – who share a commitment to local sourcing, low carbon footprint, ethical trading and premium service. We also sponsor a child through school in the Darjeeling district of India.
Black Tea is made from leaves that have been fully oxidized – this changes the colour of leaves from green to brown and also produces the deep rich and robust flavour. Oolong is a semi fermented tea where the fermentation process is stopped before the leaves begin to change colour. Green Tea is steamed, baked or pan fried to prevent oxidation and therefore the leaves remain green. White Tea, like Green Tea, is also ‘unprocessed’, but is harvested before the leaves are fully developed; the name derives from the fine silvery-white hairs on the unopened buds of the tea plant. These buds and baby leaves are carefully gathered and left to dry in the sun.
All our Assams, Ceylons and Darjeelings are Single Estate (which is a sign of purity) although the particular Estate (or Garden) they come from may vary.
