During the Ming dynasty (1368-1644) Chinese culture became fascinated by nature. One offshoot of this interest was the development of Artisan teas (also known as ‘blooming’ or ‘treasure’ teas). They are made by carefully wrapping dried flowers inside an outer layer of hand-sewn green tea leaves. The teas are served in a large wine glass; as they slowly absorb water, the flower blossoms, filling the glass with colour, perfume and beauty – this is tea as a work of art!
